UE caught in misinformation (anonymous supporter) 10 Feb 12:57 EST

Having read the Crescent article, listened, read, and watched the reports, I find the lack of candor from UE disturbing. First, a broker apporached UE two months ago, and they were told by the President they would like to know what it would fetch. This indicated the school was seeking to sell. The whole arguement of "it would be irresponsible to not look at a serious offer" is smoke. If someone wants to buy an irreplaceable art piece, it would likely not be considered. "Not For Sale" would be the response, and WUEV should be in that category.

The whole discussion of "the call letters would not be changed do to FCC rules" shows how clueless Ms. Dowell and the rest of her staff are in the station operation. This is just hogwash. In addition, it does not matter really where the radio station report on campus. Communications, College relations, President's office, Student Activities, Information Technologies, whatever. It still can support the school and the students. Even Ms. Dowell tried to lie about how students at WUEV don't get credit, unlike a true student activity like the Crescent. It was nice to see that the faculty clearly showed that this was just more of the spin in trying to cover up their decision.
The President should not just leave it to the current station Manager, Dowell, and the VP of Institutional affairs to shape the future. There should be a cross section group of students, faculty, and community people for this task. If students are left out, then WUEV will not succeed. Don't leave it to the three people who have placed WUEV in its current state, as the unholy trinity of Crowley, Dowell, and Barner will not likey contribute to the success of the project. From the tone of the interviews and quotes, you can already see this will be an uphill battle.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who caught that little gem. It just shows how little the person charged with running a radio station knows about radio.

Ms. Dowell, for your edification, while the station call letters would go with the frequency, the purchaser has no obligation to retain those call letters (unless contractually agreed to by the two parties). If the buyer applied for new call letters which were eventually approved by the FCC, WUEV would return to the pool of available calls.

As an example, WUEV's former call letters, WEVC, are now used by a station in New Hampshire.
