So, we have saved WUEV...for the time being. We must not rest on our laurels because this is surely just the first battle in what may be a protracted struggle.
What President Jennings said may have placated us for now, but it did not assure some of us. He left the door wide open for a potential sale down the road if he doesn't see "success" in the initiatives he has outlined. It is now up to him to define "success" so all parties involved will know what goals they are to strive for.
There have been a couple of names bandied about this forum over the past week that we all need to get over: Len Clark and Marcia Dowell.
For the record, I have nothing but respect for Len Clark. He has been a friend and a mentor to me for more than 10 years. I would love nothing more than to walk into room 301 one day and see him sitting at his desk behind that window. But, barring some incredible change the universe, he won't be coming back to WUEV.
Also for the record, I have nothing but contempt for Marcia Dowell. She has been nothing but an obstacle to the success of WUEV since the first day she came to University Relations. I would like nothing more than to see her sitting by the overpass at the corner of Green River Road and the Lloyd Expressway holding a "will work for food" sign. But, she's not going anywhere.
So, with the status of those two people known (or assumed), it comes to us. We need to get over our feelings for those two people and work for the greater good. It's time for us as "Friends of WUEV" to put our money where our mouth is and offer the resources necessary to make sure that WUEV occupies that prime Olmsted real estate for years to come. Whether those resources be financial or in-kind, we need to make them. I'll be on record right now as saying I'll donate the first fifty bucks to an organized, university-endorsed "Friends of WUEV" program. (If they catch me on the paycheck where rent isn't due, I may double that.) Those of you who still live in Evansville -- you need to do that same. If you don't have the financial resources, offer a couple hours of your time to help at the station or with station events. We can't let our passion for WUEV stop at this website. Continue to fight the good fight for Evansville's Radio Station.

I doubt talk of the station being sold would have ever occurred if Marsha Dowell had not driven Len Clark out of the station he loved and the life he had built at the University of Evansville. He dedicated his life to that station and the record shows his success. If he would have been allowed to continue his vision, there is no doubt President Jennings would not be able to deny the success of the station not only as a great communication and outreach program of the university to the community at large, but as a great opportunity for the students at the university to learn what drive and determination can accomplish.

That's exactly what they wanted to do...get us to donate money.
I don't mind donating, but we need to know that we are donating for the greater good...not to continue the mediocrity that has existed.

Which is why I'm not just going to cut a check to the University and say, "have at it." It is first imperative for the University to explain what steps they are going to take to rebuild the standing of WUEV -- and why I should believe what they're telling me.

I couldn't agree more. Just as they asked for input from students, faculty, and alumni regarding the sale of WUEV... I would like to see all three groups have a say in any improvements to WUEV.
