Your Favorite WUEV Memory (Amber Wardwell) 04 Feb 20:21 EST

While we're all here, I thought it would be nice to have something positive to think about as well- What is your favorite memory from your time at WUEV?

Mine- Those of you who worked on the Other Side might remember the "Goth Lady." She was particularly interested in the male metal DJs, and would usually cozy up to them one at a time over the phone. One summer there was only myself and one other DJ working the Other Side, and Sparky the Jester decided to created another persona so that we had a little more variety on the show. He did a fairly good English accent, so his cousin Gabbleratchet was born.

Goth Lady loved Gabbleratchet, but hated Sparky completely. She spent so much time on the phone to the show that eventually it became necessary to "send Gabble back home."

Poor thing was totally depressed, and ended up deciding she didn't hate Sparky so much after all.

Just one memory? Wow...I couldn't stop there.

I remember the summer of 1998, between my junior and senior year when I worked news and blues for three months. People in Powell Hall (I forget what it's called now) kept stealing my spaghetti. Len yelled at me for putting my feet on the desk, but I also walked around barefoot. I took Kris Embry into a blues bar when he was underage to see a local blues musician who gave us free tickets. Phil Bailey also offered to teach us how to make bombs out of Pringle cans and flashlight batteries.

Not to take too much credit, but the news wall of shame started during my tenure with Stacy Woodruff and Leandra Nolting working together to find the best (really the worst) of Network Indiana copy.

It was always fun having Terry Waggoner (what happened to him???) and Tom Benson do sports live during the 5:00 newscasts.

I also enjoyed the producers' bowling night shortly before I graduated. I thought the one beer would improve my game but, alas, it did not. The guys beat the girls and I think Christina McDade and I were pretty put out by that fact. I also found that it was possible to fit six or seven people in my car at once. I'm a slightly better bowler now, but I have a station wagon so I could take everybody home from the bowling alley.

What about the time Len caught the cleaning person eating Michael Light's birthday cake after hours on the webcam?

Terry Waggoner's in Franklin. He's a youth minister at a church down there. Happened to bump into him on a short stint selling office supplies before I started my current gig.

I have fond memories of going to Providence, Rhode Island with Len Clark back in '96. The CMJ Conference in NYC back in '99 ruled! I especially liked being the Vanderburgh County Jail's favorite non-Party Lights DJ!... I should try to dig up my fan mail sometime.

I also like that, years later, I would visit E'ville and people who used to listen to "The Other Side" would come up to me, say they remember me, and then heap showers of praise on me. This also happened to me here in Indy and in Louisville. WUEV was the only thing I liked about UE. If I didn't find my niche there, I would have bailed out on that place long before I eventually did.

Of course there are several prominent memories - many of us spent more time at the station than in classrooms. Anyhow, I'll mention a couple.

1) Len and I were editing public service announcements and came across one that made us laugh until we were nearly in tears. The PSA was for a Christian organization of some sort and the vocal talent was not ennunciating very well. The final line was supposed to read, "Ticking off your parents is one thing; ticking off god is another." However, it sounded as though the line was, "Taking off your pants is one thing; taking off god's is another." We must have listened to that cut 10 or 15 times and of course repeated it to one another frequently for the remainder of my duration at WUEV.

2) Len and I discovered our mutual guilty pleasure one afternoon: "Beverly Hills 90210". During the last two seasons of the show, I always looked forward to Thursday afternoons so that Len and I could disect behind closed doors the trials and tribulations of the 90210 gang.

3) I loved working in the afternoons since I was able to interact with such a broad intersection of WUEVers - sports, jazz, producers, various DJs with non-afternoon shows. It was great seeing such a diverse array of students coming together in the station, one of the most comfortable and welcoming areas on campus.

Ah, the Goth Lady!

She took me joyriding once back in the summer of '99. I was well fed and boozed up that day. Yes, I used a stalker for a free meal and booze. I never did see her again after that. Ha ha!

I work on Rated G, so basically, any Saturday that included the unique readings of storytime theatre offer plenty of happy memories. I hope to have many more such saturdays

the best night we had was a huge dance party in the rose garden...we invited all the Party Lights listeners to campus for a huge throw-down...the thing i remember about that night was pulling out a stack of about 150-12" inch singles out of my trunk and walking aroud the crowd-all the vinyl disappeared in about 60 seconds.

the international scratch-off between members of the UE basketball team and the UEV airstaff was also fairly mememorable

long live the Jam House
